A half hunter, sometimes called a demi hunter, is a hunter case with a hole in it. The lid still swings shut over the dial and still takes the knocks that a pocket or a bag hands out, but a circular or oval aperture is cut through the middle of it and glazed, and the hour numerals are printed around the outside of that window. You read the time through the window with the case closed and open it only when you want the whole dial.
This is the question most people are actually asking when they land here. Full Hunter Pocket Watches have a solid lid, so the dial is completely hidden until you press the crown; they look the most traditional and protect the glass best. An open-face watch has no lid at all and is the quickest to read but the most exposed. A half hunter sits between the two, which is why it is the largest single group across the Pocket Watches collection.
Every half hunter in stock is hand-wound mechanical, so there is no battery to replace. Gold and black tones lead the finishes, followed by brass, with a bronze-tone piece and a handful of silver tones. Many of the covers are fretworked or see-through, which puts them in Skeleton Pocket Watches as well. The darker end of the range sits in Black Pocket Watches. These are new vintage-style watches, so the metal names describe the finish on the case.
We are Australian-owned and ship to New Zealand from Brisbane. In-stock orders are usually dispatched within one to two business days, Monday to Friday, with standard and express options at checkout, and standard shipping is free on New Zealand orders over $99. Made-to-order pieces take longer. You have 60 days to change your mind, paying return postage yourself, and the movement is covered for 12 months. A chain is not included but is available separately.
Both have a hinged cover over the dial, but a half hunter has a glazed window cut into that cover with the hour numerals printed around it, so the time reads while the case is shut. A full hunter's cover is solid, so you press the crown and open it to see the dial.
It is a pocket watch whose hinged front cover carries a viewing aperture in the middle. The cover still protects the crystal, and the hands show through the window when it is closed.
Every half hunter in stock is hand-wound mechanical, so it takes a daily wind and no battery. Turn the crown until the resistance turns firm, then stop.
Gold and black tones are the most common, followed by brass, with occasional bronze and silver tones. They are finishes on the case of a new vintage-style watch rather than precious metal.

Half Hunter Pocket Watches have a hinged cover with a window cut into it, so you can read the time without opening the case. It is the compromise style: the dial stays protected, but a glance still tells you the hour.
